Jeffrey returns to the Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup at Bushy Park

The established front-runners in the Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup will face a familiar challenge this weekend (August 31/September 1), when former Winter Cup Champion, Guyana's Kristian Jeffrey, returns to Bushy Park Barbados for the first time in two years. Round three of the 2019 series, on track during the Williams Industries International Race Meet, will also see the SR3 Cup debut of double Trinidad & Tobago Rally Champion Stuart Johnson, returning to circuit racing after a long absence.

 

  Jeffrey lies fifth in the SR3 Cup roll of honour behind Suleman Esuf and the Maloney brothers, with seven wins in his 17 appearances in the Suzuki-powered sports racers; with a further seven podium finishes, two pole positions and two fastest laps to his credit, his Ôhit rate; is among the best. His most recent victory came at his home circuit of South Dakota last November in his Torginol Paints-backed SR3 and he was also a winner on his most recent visit to Bushy Park, at the 2017 Williams International.

 

  A second-generation racer in a family of sportsmen and women, he first raced karts, winning the first shifter kart race in Guyana in 2007, then the Championship, before migrating to Canada. He has raced cars since 2013, claimed a hat-trick of wins on his Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) debut at Bushy Park in July 2014, then won back-to-back titles in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, 14 wins in 21 races a record unlikely to be challenged in a hurry.

 

  He represented Guyana in the Race Of Champions Caribbean Cup 2014 at Bushy Park and has contested two seasons in the UK Radical Challenge Championship, finishing fifth in 2017 and fourth last year. Jeffrey and his father Kevin had both hoped that Kristian would be able to race the Evo as well as the Radical this coming weekend, but late arrival of parts required for a rebuild left no time for adequate preparation or testing.

 

  Johnson's return to circuit racing for the first time since 2004, when he raced a Group 2 Honda Civic, is linked to those times, as he explained: "What prompted me to try the SR3 Cup was a phone call from one of my sponsors from my early days, Fast Parts, asking if I would be interested in trying the Radical. I couldn;t refuse the offer as I have always had a passion for wheel-to-wheel racing and that's where it all began for me."

 

  Following a successful few years in rallying - T&T Rally Club Champion Driver in 2016 and 2017, with victory in 2017 one of his five consecutive top three finishes in Rally Trinidad - Johnson is now also competing in the BimmaCup Caribbean Championship; on his debut in Antigua in February, he finished fifth, then second in last month's round in round in St Vincent.

  

  The return of Jeffrey and the debut of the competitive and determined Johnson, who becomes the 37th driver to race a Radical in the region, will add further spice to a series which has already produced some close and hard-fought racing this year on the 2.01-kilometre Bushy Park International Circuit, with just 13 points covering the top four. With 100 points, former Champion Sean Maloney leads his brother Mark by seven, with Jamaica's William Myers third on 89, two ahead of Reigning Champion Stuart Maloney. All but Myers have been race-winners - the young Jamaican has five podium finishes to his credit, however - along with T&T's Kristian Boodoosingh, whose total of 57 points in sixth place reflects a rare component failure at the first race meet of the season, from which he picked up only six points. The final round is at Guyana's South Dakota (November 16/17), where Johnson is hoping to join the grid once again.
